Frequently Asked Questions

What is BBB AUTO LINE?

BBB AUTO LINE is a dispute resolution program that settles automotive warranty disputes as an alternative to litigation. This service is offered free of charge to consumers.

Funding for staff and administrative costs is committed in advance by the participating manufacturers to ensure a lack of bias.

Staff and arbitrators are independent of manufacturers that participate in BBB AUTO LINE and perform no duties for these manufacturers other than providing impartial dispute resolution services.

How do I file a complaint?

Start the process by filing a complaint with BBB National Programs using the online complaint form or calling 1 (800) 955-5100. We will then send you the Program Rules and Information, along with the requirements to open a BBB AUTO LINE claim.

Required information includes:

  • Your name and address
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Make, model, and year of your vehicle
  • Current mileage
  • A detailed description of the problem

We’ll notify you when we receive the required information or need additional information.

When your BBB AUTO LINE case is open, we’ll send a copy of your claim form to your manufacturer for their response.

What is arbitration?

Arbitration is an informal process in which two parties in a dispute present their arguments to an impartial third party, an arbitrator.

The arbitrator listens to the testimony, reviews the evidence, and delivers a written decision they deem fair and compliant with BBB AUTO LINE Arbitration Rules for California.

The consumer can either accept or reject the arbitrator’s decision. If it’s accepted, it will be binding on the manufacturer.

Who is the arbitrator?

BBB AUTO LINE arbitrators are neutral attorneys or professionals with arbitration experience. They’re trained by BBB National Programs to conduct hearings and make decisions following BBB AUTO LINE Arbitration Rules.

The arbitrator will not necessarily have automotive expertise but can call upon an impartial technical expert furnished by BBB AUTO LINE when necessary.

A description of the arbitrator’s qualifications and the background will be made available before the hearing.
